About Astana

Astana, formerly known as Nur-Sultan, is the capital of Kazakhstan and the second-largest city in the country after Almaty, with a population of about 1.62 million within the city limits. It sits on the banks of the Ishim River in the north of Kazakhstan, within the Akmola Region but self-administering, and has served as the national capital since 1997. This page lists today's Fajr, Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib, and Isha times for the city's Muslim community.

Astana is the capital of Kazakhstan and, with about 1.62 million residents within the city limits, the second-largest city in the country after Almaty, which served as the national capital until 1997. The city stands on the banks of the Ishim River in northern Kazakhstan and lies within the Akmola Region, though it is administered separately as the capital. Its elevation is around 347 metres above sea level on the open northern steppe.

The settlement was founded as Aqmoly in 1830 and passed through several names over its history, including Akmolinsk, Tselinograd, and Aqmola, before adopting the name Astana, meaning capital in Kazakh, in 1998. In 2019 it was briefly renamed Nur-Sultan in honour of former president Nursultan Nazarbayev, but the name reverted to Astana in 2022. For the city's Muslim residents, this page provides daily prayer times calculated for its northern location.

Prayer Times in Astana

Astana keeps a single fixed time zone year-round with no daylight saving, so prayer times shift only with the natural change of the seasons rather than a clock change. The city lies far to the north at roughly 51 degrees latitude, which produces a wide seasonal swing: midsummer brings very long days that push Fajr to the early morning and Isha late into the evening, while in deep winter the days are short and Maghrib arrives in the late afternoon. Times on this page are calculated using the Muslim World League method.

Ramadan in Astana

Because Astana lies far to the north, the length of the daily fast during Ramadan depends heavily on where the month falls in the seasonal cycle, since the gap between Fajr and Maghrib changes markedly through the year. When Ramadan falls in winter the fasting day is comparatively short, while a summer Ramadan brings long daylight hours and a much later Isha, so the daily fast is correspondingly longer.

During Ramadan, the suhoor and iftar timings track Fajr and Maghrib on this page, both calculated with the Muslim World League method and adjusted automatically as the dates progress. Worshippers in Astana can use the live grid to plan suhoor before dawn and iftar at sunset, and to follow the timing of Isha and the additional Taraweeh prayers held at mosques across the city through the month.
