The area has a long history of settlement, with the earliest evidence of habitation dating to the Bronze Age at the nearby site of Tepe Khurvin. Karaj developed further under the Safavid and Qajar eras and retains historical buildings and memorials from those periods. Drawing residents from many parts of the country, the city has earned the nickname "Little Iran" for its diverse population.
